Mistakes Were Made, Continents Were Taken
The file lands on my desk two hundred years thick, and I solve it on page one.
It’s a missing person job, but not the usual kind. Everybody in this file is present and accounted for. Named, counted, measured, photographed against a ruler, filed. The one who’s missing is whoever did it.
I start reading. Sovereignty was acquired. Acquired, like taste. The verb sits in the middle of the sentence with nobody holding it. Somebody took something from somebody. Three parties to that transaction, and the paperwork has managed to lose two of them and misplace the third on purpose.
The land was settled. Settled the way dust settles. Settled the way a bill is settled. Settled the way an argument is settled, which is to say by one party leaving. Three meanings, and the document is relaxed about which you pick, so long as you don’t ask who was standing there holding the pegs.
The frontier was pacified. Pacified. Somebody built a whole word out of peace and pointed it the wrong way round.
The population was relocated. Relocated, as though they’d had jobs and the branch has moved. Relocated by whom? The sentence declines to say. Relocated how far? The sentence declines. Did they walk? The sentence has stepped out and will not be returning to the office today.
Shots were fired. By guns, presumably. Guns are famously self-operating.
Children were removed.
I put the page down for a while, on that one.
Removed. As in a splinter, a stain, a tooth. It’s the cleanest sentence in the file, and it’s describing the worst thing in it. The tidier the grammar gets, the more it’s carrying. That’s not a coincidence. That’s the mechanism.
Here’s the part that closes the case.
The passive voice vanishes the moment the paperwork needs somebody to blame. The natives attacked. The tribe refused to move on. They resisted. Suddenly everyone’s got a subject. Suddenly the sentences are crisp little machines with a hand on every lever. Nobody’s shots get fired by themselves out here. Nobody’s spear was thrown.
So the grammar isn’t broken. The grammar is exquisite. It’s the most precisely engineered instrument in the entire archive. It hands out agency to exactly the people you’d like to hold responsible and withholds it from exactly the people you wouldn’t. Two hundred years of that applied consistently and at scale.
And the beautiful thing is that it cost nothing. No research budget. No patent. No secret laboratory. The single most effective erasure technology ever deployed on this continent shipped free with the English language.
Case closed. The culprit was in the room the whole time.
He typed the sentence.
